Ph.D. candidate Ngo Thanh Phong in Civil Engineering successfully defended a doctoral dissertation at the University-level
On August 05, 2023, Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) held an examining committee for the doctoral dissertation at the University-level for Ph.D. candidate Ngo Thanh Phong, (Ph.D. candidate code: 196204002) in Civil Engineering (Program code: 9580201), with the topic “Investigation on the mechanical characteristics and the durability of Geopolymer stabilised soil” under the supervision of Dr. Phan To Anh Vu (TDTU) and Dr. Bui Quoc Bao (TDTU). This is the second doctoral dissertation in the field of Civil Engineering - Faculty of Civil Engineering, evaluated at the University-level.
The candidate was recruited in September 2019. Before defending the doctoral dissertation, he completed 12 credits of specialized courses, 06 credits of doctoral research topics, 04 credits of literature review, completed the faculty-level doctoral dissertation examining committee, and 03 scientific papers published in reputable journals (Q1: 02 articles, Q3: 01 article).
During the dissertation defense, the council members highly appreciated the contributions of the research topic. The research results enable predicting the strength development of stabilized compacted soil materials using Geopolymer (GSCS) by utilizing the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) value at a maintenance period of 56 days. The dissertation proposed that it is possible to completely or partially replace traditional adhesive materials with low-carbon and sustainable alternatives such as geopolymer, or by incorporating Graphene Oxide and Graphene (GO-Gr) solution into 8% cement to achieve high added value for specific applications in soil stabilization. These findings are significant for environmental conservation in Vietnam, which is considered one of the leading countries in terms of environmental protection and ecosystems.
